The redesigned 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe makes the trim decision unusually important: moving up the Canadian range can change the powertrain, fuel consumption and even the number of seats. A more expensive version is not simply the same SUV with extra screens and upholstery.

Engines and transmissions
The 1.6-litre turbo hybrid produces 231 hp total system output and uses a six-speed automatic. The 2.5-litre turbo produces 277 hp and uses an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Canadian powertrain announcement.
The Canadian model summary lists HTRAC AWD across these configurations. A hybrid badge does not mean this Santa Fe must be plugged in; do not confuse this regular hybrid with a plug-in model from another year or market. Hyundai Canada 2024 model summary.
Fuel economy
| NRCan 2024 configuration | City L/100 km | Highway L/100 km | Combined L/100 km |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santa Fe Hybrid AWD | 6.8 | 6.9 | 6.9 |
| Santa Fe AWD, 2.5 turbo | 12.1 | 8.8 | 10.6 |
| Santa Fe AWD XRT | 12.2 | 9.1 | 10.8 |
Source: NRCan 2024 Fuel Consumption Guide. The XRT has its own rating; neither it nor the other turbo versions should be advertised using the hybrid figure.
At 20,000 km, those combined ratings represent roughly 1,380 litres for the hybrid, 2,120 litres for the regular turbo AWD and 2,160 litres for XRT. The hybrid-to-regular-turbo difference is about 740 litres annually. Multiply by a realistic fuel price for your area; these standardized calculations are not a guarantee of your consumption.
Interior and practicality
The Canadian equipment matrix shows a progression from cloth in Preferred to leatherette in Trend and XRT, leather in Luxury, and Nappa leather in Ultimate Calligraphy. The latter replaces the second-row bench with captain’s chairs, reducing total seating to six. 2024 seating and upholstery matrix.
If your household needs seven seats, the top trim is not automatically the right answer. Check third-row access with any child seats installed, and see how much luggage fits with all rows occupied. Try the tailgate in a realistic parking space and check whether smaller passengers can reach the controls comfortably.
Infotainment and connectivity
The 2024 Canadian matrix lists a 12.3-inch touchscreen across the range. An expansive dashboard display does not mean every trim has identical convenience equipment: check the instrument display, phone charging arrangement and camera views on the car you are considering. Safety and driver assistance
The model summary lists adaptive cruise control and lane-following assistance across the regular range, while upper-level camera equipment varies. These systems are driver assistance, not permission to stop watching the road. Ask for a practical demonstration of the fitted features rather than assuming that an illustration of the highest trim applies to all versions. 2024 assistance-equipment matrix.

Choosing a trim
Preferred and Trend are the logical starting points if fuel budgeting matters most. XRT is a different proposition, not simply the hybrid with a tougher look. For Luxury and Ultimate Calligraphy, weigh the desired equipment against fuel use and seating needs. A family needing the seventh seat has a stronger reason to stop below the top trim.
If towing matters, check the exact configuration’s limits, required equipment and payload label. Do not borrow an advertised maximum from another trim or treat a towing accessory alone as proof of the vehicle’s allowed loaded-trailer weight.
Check the VIN for outstanding safety recalls before buying. Transport Canada recall 2024404 addresses a transmission-software fault on certain 2024 Santa Fes that can damage the transmission and allow movement while parked without the parking brake. Hyundai advises always applying the parking brake when parking. Dealers update the software and inspect or replace the transmission as necessary. Confirm applicability and repair status for the individual vehicle; this is not a complete recall list.
Is every 2024 Canadian Santa Fe a hybrid?
No. The regular Preferred and Trend configurations are hybrids; XRT, Luxury and Ultimate Calligraphy use the 2.5-litre turbo powertrain.
Does every trim seat seven?
No. The regular Ultimate Calligraphy configuration seats six. Verify seating and child-seat fit before choosing it for a larger household.
