Canada’s 2024 range consists of Trendline, Comfortline, Comfortline R-Line Black Edition and Highline R-Line. All use 4MOTION AWD. The decision to choose R-Line is therefore about its equipment and appearance, not gaining AWD over the lower trims. Volkswagen’s Canadian 2024 buyer’s guide.
Engine and transmission
A 2.0L turbocharged engine produces 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft, paired with an eight-speed automatic. The R-Line name does not mean a higher-output engine in this Canadian range. Canadian powertrain comparison.
That distinction matters when comparing an ordinary Comfortline with the Black Edition. If you primarily want the basic powertrain and space, the lower trim remains relevant. If the exterior treatment and additional features are what attracted you, compare their value directly rather than expecting a performance-model transformation.
What the Black Edition adds
Over Comfortline, the Canadian guide identifies black R-Line exterior details, 19-inch black wheels, a panoramic roof, front/rear parking sensors and a different steering-wheel treatment. It also adds customizable cabin ambient lighting. Trim equipment, page 4.
Check the wheel and tyre condition carefully on a used example, along with the roof’s operation and maintenance history. A styling preference can justify choosing this version, but condition and a complete inspection matter more than the badge when comparing individual vehicles from an older model year.
Interior and technology

Seating and practical use
A third row was optional in the Canadian buyer’s guide. Confirm the actual seating configuration; neither a five-seat nor seven-seat layout should be assumed simply from an R-Line badge. Optional seating information.

Recall check: Transport Canada recalls 2025066 and 2026242 include certain 2024 Tiguans whose rearview-camera image may fail to appear. The remedy updates the camera-control software. Ask Volkswagen to check the VIN and confirm all applicable work is complete; do not assume that either notice applies to every vehicle or that one old repair receipt clears every campaign.

Competition and buying verdict
A comparable-year Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 or Toyota RAV4 makes a useful alternative to inspect. Match drivetrain, equipment and vehicle condition rather than comparing only the model name. The Tiguan Black Edition is most convincing when you specifically want its design and convenience features; Comfortline is the benchmark if those extras are not priorities.
