A renewal deserves more attention than checking whether the monthly payment increased. Your household, commute, vehicle and benefit needs may have changed since the last policy was arranged. In Ontario, the 2026 accident-benefits changes add another reason to compare the renewal documents carefully. This checklist helps you prepare a focused conversation with your broker or insurer; it does not suggest cancelling protection solely to reach a target premium.
Start with three documents
Put the expiring certificate, the renewal certificate and the current endorsements side by side. Keep the policy wording available for questions about how a coverage operates. Your Certificate of Automobile Insurance summarizes the insured vehicles, purchased coverages, rating information and policy period. A renewal email or payment notice alone may not show the changes you need to assess.
Mark the renewal’s start date, the annual premium, payment plan and any instructions about acceptance or cancellation. Give yourself enough time to ask questions and obtain alternatives before the current term ends. A calendar reminder is more useful than relying on remembering the date after a busy week.
Update the details that describe your household
| What changed? | Question for your representative |
|---|---|
| Address or parking | Is the garaging information current? |
| Commute or annual kilometres | Does the stated use reflect the new routine? |
| Household drivers | Who needs to be listed, including new licensed drivers? |
| Delivery/rideshare/business activity | Is this use permitted and properly insured? |
| Vehicle or modifications | Are the VIN, accessories and any declared changes recorded? |
| Loan or lease | Are the lender/lessor details and required coverages current? |
| Employer benefits | Have benefit eligibility, limits or employment changed? |
Prepare facts before requesting a cheaper quote. If you now work from home, explain the actual reduction in commuting and annual kilometres. If a household member uses the vehicle regularly, discuss that person’s role rather than assuming their occasional use needs no disclosure. Ask which supporting documents the insurer needs and keep a copy of any correction.
Read the accident-benefits section line by line
Since July 1, 2026, Ontario makes accident benefits other than medical, rehabilitation and attendant care optional. An existing policy’s transition needs care: FSRA says expiring policies renew with their coverages and limits unless the customer agrees to changes in writing. Do not interpret a new menu of options as an instruction to remove protection. Request a clear explanation of what your renewal retains, what any proposed alternative changes, and who is eligible under the selected benefits.
A useful request is: “Please show the accident benefits I currently have, the limits on renewal, and any option you are proposing to change. Explain the premium effect separately from the coverage effect.” That creates a record of the decision. If the answer only identifies a lower payment, ask for the missing benefit comparison before agreeing.
Review support outside the auto policy
Make an inventory of sick leave, disability benefits, savings and any supplementary coverage. For each, record the eligibility conditions, start of benefits, payment duration, limits and whether it continues if you leave your job. Ask the representative to explain gaps rather than assuming two plans overlap completely. If you are self-employed, describe that clearly; your ability to absorb time away from work may differ from a salaried employee’s.
Think about caregiving and household tasks as well as wages. Who would provide care for a dependent if you could not? What tasks would require paid help? These questions help frame the coverage discussion without assigning a universal amount to every family.
Compare deductibles using an emergency budget
Ask for quotes with your current deductible and a proposed alternative while keeping the other coverages matched. Suppose a hypothetical increase from $500 to $1,000 saves $120 annually. That is a $500 increase in your potential contribution to a relevant claim for a $120 annual saving. It would take about 4.2 claim-free years of that saving to equal $500, but this arithmetic is not a forecast of when a claim will occur.
The practical question is whether the larger contribution is affordable when an unexpected loss happens. Do not choose a deductible you could only pay by borrowing at a high rate. Also check lender requirements before changing protection on a financed or leased vehicle.
Review endorsements and their expiry
Ask whether options such as transportation replacement or depreciation-related protection remain included, and whether eligibility conditions change as the vehicle ages. Request the exact endorsement wording and limits. “Replacement coverage” can be used loosely in conversation; clarify what the product actually does and when it applies. A contract from another insurer is not proof of how yours settles a loss.
A renewal comparison log
| Review item | Keep | Change proposed | Written confirmation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vehicle/drivers/use | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Liability and deductibles | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Accident benefits | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Endorsements | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Annual total and payment plan | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Effective dates | ____ | ____ | ____ |
Use this log whether staying with the current insurer or shopping elsewhere. If changing providers, ask the existing insurer about cancellation timing and charges, and obtain confirmation of the new coverage start. Coordinate dates carefully instead of cancelling first and assuming the new quote is a bound policy.
Before closing the file
- Resolve any driver, vehicle or use inaccuracies.
- Document deliberate changes and the reasons you chose them.
- Review the issued certificate against the accepted offer.
- Keep proof of payment and updated proof of insurance.
- Set a reminder for the next review, or sooner if your circumstances change.
A good renewal review leaves you knowing both what you pay and what you kept. The process should make trade-offs visible, not turn a complex coverage decision into a single monthly number.
